How to Keep a Hardwood Floor Looking Good

When it comes to maintaining a solid hardwood floor, there are several things to keep in mind.  The best way to keep a hardwood floor looking great is to stop the problems before they even happen.

The biggest contributing factor to a poor looking hardwood floor is debris.  Most problems stem from debris being tracked into the house in the first place.  While implementing a no-shoes policy is important, quality rugs are a good idea at every entrance.  If you can stop the dirt from coming in from outside the home, you will be way ahead.  Realistically, you can only control the dirt and debris so much, especially if you have pets or kids which most people do.

How a floor is cleaned is very important to maintaining a floor.  You always want to use the cleaner meant for the type of finish on your floor.  Most finish manufactures recommend a certain product for cleaning their finish.  You always want to follow-up with your contractor to make sure you are using the proper cleaner.  Not only is that specific cleaner designed for the finish on your floor, but also it prevents voided warranty concerns.  Most finish manufactures warranties only allow for their cleaners to be used.  I know what you're thinking, "how will they know what cleaner I used?"; well they actually have a way of testing to see exactly what cleaner is used.  It is best to only used recommended cleaners.

Before mopping, it is very important to thoroughly vacuum the floor.  This prevents debris from getting caught in the mop and causing the mop to turn into a piece of sandpaper.  You can sweep as well before you mop, but a vacuum is much more efficient and will provide a better foundation.  How the mop is used also will prevent dirt and debris from building up around the perimeter of the floor.  Make sure to keep the dirt pile in front of the mop and don't push the mop up against the baseboard.

Every 2 to 3 years it is also a good idea to have a professional maintenance coat performed.  This involves a little amount of time and half the cost of a refinish or less.  If you need a maintenance coat done on your hardwood floor, contact Colt's Contracting today to get a free estimate.  We provide services in Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Caldwell, Star Idaho as well as any surrounding areas.  We will travel up to 100 miles!
